山田耕筰がドイツ留学から帰国して間もない1914年にまとめた作品である。「フィルハーモニー回想」（1926年、『交響楽』掲載文）において山田は、この作品のうちに「私」が息づいていると述べ、おのずから独自性を認識することになったと回想している。

《彼と彼女―7つのポエム》は、「舞踊詩」として括られる作品である。音楽と舞踊にリズムを通貫させて一つの芸術にしようという試みである。山田耕筰は、1916年1月の自作品発表会以降、「舞踊詩」という名称を用いるようになった。

このピアノ曲は、もともと詩曲(ポエム)として作曲されたが、山田にとっての「ポエム」は、音だけでは不充分なものであり、運動（舞踊）を要求するものであった。本作品は、音楽の「静」に舞踊の「動」が同化するように展開する。全7曲は、それぞれ物語にそって音楽が作られた。例えば第3曲では、「彼」と「彼女」がそれぞれの内奥に響く歌に気づき苦悶するが、どこからともなくきこえる僧院の鐘の音に力を得て、その響きを杖として信仰の道に立つという筋書き。第6曲は、「彼」と「彼女」が憧れていた国で艶麗な楽声に舞い遊ぶ情景が描写され、音楽には古雅なメヌエットやマズルカの面影が認められる。

Composer Kōsaku Yamada completed this work in 1914, just after he returned from studying in German.Yamada said that ‘himself ’ is alive in this work, that he had come to recognize his musical individuality.(Source: ‘Philharmonic recollection’ printed in “Symphony”).

“He and She” is classified as ‘dance poem’, for its attempt to join the music and dancing through rhythm to accomplish their artistic unification.Yamada began to use this name ‘dance poem” after the recital of his own works on January in 1916.Although this piece was composed as a musical poem, Yamada required not only element of musical sound but also of dance to his ‘poem’.

This piece develops over the stillness of music and the movement of dance.All seven pieces were each composed along different stories.The third piece, for instance, is written based on a plot that ‘He’ and ‘She’ realize that a song is echoing in each mind and it makes them agony to listen to.But then they get encouraged to overcome the mysterious song in their mind, from a sound of the temple bell from nowhere.In the sixth piece, there is a scene that ‘He’ and ‘She’ having fun in the fascinating sound in the country they admire, where they can hear classical minuet and mazurka.
