This collection of minuets was composed for a Viennese casino (an entertainment venue for dancing, etc.), and the clavier version was published in 1785. It should be noted that the “12 Minuets,” Hob.IX:3 was also composed for a similar purpose.
Each piece features an 8-measure introduction, followed by a main section primarily structured in 8-measure phrases, and in some pieces, a trio. Each of these sections is repeated by means of repeat signs.
The trio of the 10th piece (in C major) clearly modulates to the parallel minor.
The normative musical structure and the modulation to the minor key in the trio, characteristic of Gebrauchsmusik (utility music), can also be observed in the “12 Minuets,” Hob.IX:11, composed for a charity ball in 1792.
