On November 25, 1792, in Vienna, for a charity ball held at the Redoutensaal (ballroom), Haydn composed practical dance pieces. In addition to these "12 Minuets," "12 German Dances" Hob.IX:12were also composed for a similar purpose.
These works, originally written for orchestra, were arranged for keyboard by Haydn himself.
Each piece begins with an 8- to 10-bar introduction, followed by a main section with a clear 8-bar phrase structure, and then a trio. These sections are repeated by means of repeat signs. When actually performed as dance accompaniment, it is likely that each section was repeated numerous times.
In the trio, modulations to the relative minor or parallel minor are often observed, and a da capo instruction leads back to the main section of the minuet. This is a highly typical form for a minuet, and it indicates that these pieces were occasional music composed for the purpose of accompanying dances.
