First, this minuet may sound simple at first glance, but it contains many non-harmonic tones, which appear on strong beats. These are non-harmonic tones such as passing tones, neighbor tones, and suspensions. Passing tones and neighbor tones are usually written on weak beats to smooth the flow, but when they are written on strong beats, as in this minuet, it carries significant meaning.
It is a very stylish and alluring expression that cannot be achieved on weak beats. For example:
- Measure 1, beat 1: E-flat (a non-harmonic tone called an appoggiatura)
- Measure 3, beat 1: E-flat (passing tone)
- Measure 5, beat 1: A (suspension)
- Measure 5, beat 2: F-sharp (neighbor tone)
- Measure 5, beat 3: G (suspension)
- Measure 6: Same as Measure 5
- Measure 7, beat 1: D (suspension), F (appoggiatura)
- Measure 7, beat 3: D (passing tone)
These non-harmonic tones continue throughout the entire minuet.
Performers should keenly perceive these non-harmonic tones and play with an image of a stylish and alluring story.
