Born in Tokyo, Mai Yamada moved to France after graduating from Toho Gakuen School of Music, where she completed the highest course at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris. She won 1st prize at the All Japan Piano Audition and received awards in various domestic and international competitions, including the Claude Kahn Competition (France) and the Osaka International Music Competition. She has also performed extensively with orchestras and given numerous recitals both in Japan and abroad.
Focusing primarily on the works of J.M. Damase, she actively champions compositions by French and British composers, and has given the Japanese premieres of many works. In 2017, she released her debut album, “Hommage à Damase pour son 90e anniversaire” (Sonare).
In 2023, she established her independent label, “Morris Records.” Her second album, “Damase: Piano Works,” was released and featured in the Tokyo Shimbun and Chunichi Shimbun. It was also selected as a “Tokusenban” (Special Selection) in Record Geijutsu magazine and recommended in Asahi Shimbun’s “for your Collection.”
Her activities are diverse, encompassing solo performances, ensemble playing, and composition.
