A piece composed by Rivier for Marguerite Long's "La Petite Méthode de piano," published in her later years. It is said that within this collection, the works byJolivet,Dutilleux, Raymond Loucheur,Rivier,Auric,Françaix are difficult pieces (equivalent to Czerny Op. 740 or higher) that exceed the scope for learners. However, they were included at Long's insistence, who wished to encourage students' growth by deliberately exposing them to serious contemporary music. Rivier was a 20th-century French non-avant-garde composer, particularly highly regarded academically. The piece is in 2/4 time, with a main key of G major, marked Lento (dolce affettuoso). Within a single measure, minor and major modes intertwine, and polytonality frequently appears. Furthermore, as it is a lullaby, it is necessary to soften the edges of dissonances to make them sound beautiful. Additionally, it requires the expression of curvilinear undulations and nuances, and legato playing. It invites a challenge by mobilizing various techniques.
