French composer. Born in Paris in 1905. His father was a painter, and his mother was a pianist. He began composing early, but at his parents' recommendation, he started working as a teacher in 1927.
In Paris, he was deeply impressed by the music of Schoenberg and Varèse, and studied under Varèse from 1930 to 1933. He also formed 'La Jeune France' with Messiaen and others, holding their first concert in 1936. During World War II, he experienced military life. After the war, he published works such as the Ondes Martenot Concerto (1947) and the Piano Concerto (1949–50), and maintained an interest in primitive magic and exoticism.
