Six Pieces for Piano, "Various Gods" was composed in 1982 at the commission of pianist Yoko Tanaka and premiered in the same year. While Niimi's orchestral works build up delicate sonic movements to create bold and rich soundscapes, this small collection of piano pieces features light and playful music-making.
The six pieces are titled, respectively, "God's Awakening," "God's Stroll," "God's Lady," "Jubilant God," "God's Nap," and "Various Gods." In the first and third pieces, "...Awakening" and "...Lady," the interplay between 32nd notes and rests creates intricate movements. In the second piece, "...Stroll," jazz-like sonorities appear with dotted rhythms, and in the fourth piece, "Jubilant...," the dotted rhythm movements are further emphasized by chromatic harmonic sonorities. The fifth piece, "Nap," is melodious music in flat keys. The sixth piece is a unique work where, over the rhythmic pulse etched by the left hand, a passage from "Dies Irae" from the Gregorian chant Requiem Mass for the Dead and the melody of the Kumamoto folk song "Antagata Dokosa" are alternately interwoven.
As the composer himself stated, it is a "collection of pieces that are easy to play, yet pianistic, and possess a light and witty charm." However, the vividly shifting tonality and rhythmic language would require sophisticated technique and sensibility.
