A work suitable not only as teaching material for beginners and intermediate players but also for concert and recital repertoire. The Japanese title above was provided by Masatoshi Hirota, who translated Jean Roy's biography of Milhaud. While other translations such as "Beloved Child" exist, the above title seems more appropriate for this work, which lists five things children enjoy. It is a product of Milhaud's mature period, after World War II, when he began a life of commuting between Paris and California every other year. Composed at Mills on November 30-31, 1948, commissioned by the publisher Leeds, each piece is dedicated to friends and children with whom Milhaud had close family ties, and the entire work is filled with a warm atmosphere. It was premiered by the composer himself on July 1, 1949, at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. It is written in an effective and resonant style within the technical range of Czerny Op. 100 (late part) to Op. 30 (early part). Each piece is neither too long nor too short, offering good overall variation and coherence, while clearly expressing Milhaud's individuality within its straightforwardness.
