This collection of 16 waltzes was composed in 1865. The publication years are 1866 for the piano four-hands version (for duet), 1867 for the piano solo version, and 1897 for the two-piano version. Originally written for piano four-hands, it was later arranged for piano solo and two pianos. The piano four-hands and piano solo versions were dedicated to the aesthetician and music critic Eduard Hanslick (1825-1904). Hanslick was surprised that Brahms, a proponent of absolute music, wrote waltzes, which were considered entertainment music at the time. However, after Brahms began living in Vienna, he was impressed by the popular Strauss waltzes of the time and held Strauss in high regard. Nevertheless, it seems Brahms was unable to compose optimistic and cheerful waltzes like Strauss, perhaps due to his own temperament.
Tonal changes were made between the four-hands version and the arranged versions. For example, No. 14 changed from A minor to G-sharp minor, No. 15 from A major to A-flat major, and No. 16 from D minor to C-sharp minor. Additionally, No. 10 has the indication "poco scherzando," which is absent in the four-hands version.
