On November 25, 1792, Haydn composed practical dance pieces for a charity ball held at the Redoutensaal (ballroom) in Vienna. In addition to these "12 German Dances," the "12 Minuets," Hob.IX:11, were composed for a similar purpose.
These works, originally written for orchestra, were arranged for keyboard by Haydn himself.
Almost all pieces consist of 16 measures (8 measures + 8 measures), each having a repeat sign. When performed as accompaniment for dancing, it is likely that each section was repeated multiple times.
The 4th piece (C major) has a trio of the same scale as the main section, and the latter half of the 8th piece (D major) is extended by 4 measures.
The 12th piece (D major) has a 20-measure coda that exceeds the scale of the main section, which was likely performed as the final conclusion.
