Miłosz Magin
(1929, Łódź [Poland] – 1999, Bora Bora [French Polynesia])
Miłosz Magin was a Polish pianist and composer. Born in Łódź in 1929, he moved to Warsaw during his childhood. He studied piano with Margherita Trombini-Kazuro and composition with Jan Adam Maklakiewicz and Kazimierz Sikorski at the National Music High School in Warsaw.
In 1955, Magin received an honorable mention at the 5th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition held in Warsaw. He subsequently won awards at other prestigious competitions, including the Long-Thibaud International Competition in Paris and the Vianna da Motta International Competition in Lisbon.
In 1960, he moved to and settled in Paris. There, he taught piano classes at the Rachmaninoff Conservatory and later at the Paris International Music University.
Miłosz Magin performed concerts and made recordings worldwide. He frequently visited his native Poland as a soloist and as a juror for competitions. In 1985, Magin founded his own international piano competition in Paris, named after himself. The competition is held biennially, and works by Fryderyk Chopin, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, and Karol Szymanowski are mandatory repertoire.
Alongside his activities as a pianist, Magin composed dozens of works, including piano pieces and instrumental music for other instruments. In 1999, Magin passed away suddenly during a concert tour in French Polynesia.
