Pianist and composer born in Bonn, Germany. His father was a violinist and, for a time, Beethoven's teacher. After studying under his father, Ferdinand visited Beethoven in 1801 and began working for him as a secretary and copyist. His Biographical Notes Concerning Beethoven, co-authored with F.G. Wegeler in 1838, is one of the earliest and most important sources on Beethoven, and he is often recognized in music history as "Beethoven's pupil." However, after 1810, Ries became a successful and renowned musician as a pianist and composer, leaving behind numerous works, primarily piano compositions, but also large-scale pieces such as eight symphonies.
