Born in Mito City, Ibaraki Prefecture. He studied at Tokyo University of the Arts and its graduate school, under Tomojiro Ikenouchi, Jo Shimaoka, Akira Miyoshi, and Akio Yashiro. While still a student, he won numerous competitions, including the Music Competition of Japan and the Ongaku no Tomo Sha Composition Competition, gaining early recognition. Subsequently, he engaged in active composition across various genres, including television, radio, theater, and film. His music is characterized by his agility in deftly handling various techniques and his witty expressions. Currently, he holds numerous positions, including Professor at Tokyo College of Music, President of the Japan Federation of Composers, and Planning and Management Committee Member of Art Tower Mito. In addition, he engages in a wide range of social activities, such as regular appearances on the TV program “NHK Symphony Orchestra Hour” and planning and producing numerous concerts. He has received numerous awards, including the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival Excellence Award, the Japan Academy Film Prize for Outstanding Achievement in Music, the Salzburg TV Opera Festival Excellence Award, and the Prix Italia.
