Italian composer. Known for his operas and cantatas, he is considered the founder of the Neapolitan School of 18th-century opera.
Born in Palermo in 1660. In 1672, at the age of 12, he moved to Rome to receive his education. He married in 1678. His first opera was staged in 1679. In 1684, he moved to Naples and served as Kapellmeister (court music director). During his 18 years in Naples, he composed over 40 operas, 7 serenatas, 9 oratorios, and 65 cantatas.
In 1702, he traveled to Florence and Rome with his son, Domenico Scarlatti. From 1703, he served as vice-maestro di cappella at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. In 1707, he became maestro di cappella. However, his financial situation in Rome was not always favorable, and he returned to Naples in 1708. In 1716, he was granted the noble title of 'Cavaliere' by the Pope. He died in Naples in 1725.
