Henryk Pachulski
(Łazy, Poland, 1859 – Moscow, Russia, 1921)
Henryk Pachulski was a Polish pianist, composer, and educator. He studied at the Warsaw Conservatory under Stanisław Moniuszko, Władysław Żeleński, and others. Subsequently, he continued his studies in Moscow under Nikolai Rubinstein. In 1885, he received the 'Free Artist' award.
After graduation, he began his career as a pianist, performing numerous concerts in Poland and Russia. His performances were highly praised for their precise technique. While his solo piano repertoire primarily featured works by Bach, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, and Paderewski, he also gained renown for his chamber music performances.
Henryk Pachulski was also a distinguished educator. In 1886, with Tchaikovsky's recommendation, he began teaching at the Moscow Conservatory. He taught in the conservatory's piano class for the next 35 years.
Pachulski composed numerous works, including approximately 100 piano pieces such as preludes, etudes, waltzes, mazurkas, and impromptus. His works show influences from German and Russian composers. His piano works are technically demanding, and polyphonic techniques are frequently employed, as exemplified by his Etudes in Canon Style, Op. 26.
Pachulski's works were widely recognized during his lifetime, and he was elected an honorary member of the American Musicians' and Composers' Association in New York. Although Pachulski spent most of his life in Russia, he maintained strong ties with his homeland, frequently performing Polish works in his concerts and endeavoring to assist young Polish students studying in Moscow. He spared no effort in promoting Polish culture and was repeatedly invited to and participated in research society meetings at Moscow University.
