Agata Zubel
(born 1978 in Wrocław, Poland)
Agata Zubel is a Polish contemporary music composer, singer, percussionist, and educator. She began her musical education in Wrocław, primarily studying percussion during her childhood. Subsequently, she majored in composition and vocal performance at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław. She further honed her skills at a music school in Enschede, Netherlands, and at various music workshops across Europe. Agata Zubel has received scholarships from numerous cultural programs both in Poland and abroad, including the 'Young Poland' program of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation.
Agata Zubel has received numerous awards in composition competitions in Poland and around the world. Her works have been honored with the Polish Music Publishing House Award at the Andrzej Panufnik All-Polish Composition Competition and the Polish Radio Award at the Adam Didur All-Polish Composition Competition. She has also received high acclaim from many organizations and institutions in various countries, including the Netherlands, Russia, and Switzerland. Zubel has collaborated with world-renowned orchestras such as Sinfonia Varsovia, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the London Sinfonietta, as well as with leading contemporary music ensembles like Klangforum Wien, Ensemble 2E2M, and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players.
Agata Zubel's compositions primarily focus on vocal works, many of which are developed using sonoristic techniques. She is also known for her unconventional approach of using the human voice as an instrument. As a highly talented singer herself, she actively performs her own compositions, leveraging her extensive vocal range.
