Born in Yamagata City in 1967. He completed his master's degree in composition at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1992. He has received numerous awards, including 3rd Prize at the Music Competition of Japan (1989), JSCM Award for Young Composers (1996), 3rd Prize at the BMW musica viva Composition Prize (Germany/1998), 1st Prize at the Toru Takemitsu Composition Award (2002), Akutagawa Award for Music Composition (2003), and the Kanagawa Culture Award Future Prize (2002). His works have also been selected for various music festivals, such as Forum 91 (Canada/1991), Gaudeamus International Music Week '94 (Netherlands/1994), and ISCM World Music Days (Luxembourg/2000, Yokohama/2001). His compositions have been performed by ensembles and orchestras including Le Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal, and Trio Fibonacci (all based in Montreal); Nieuw Ensemble and Calefax Reed Quintet (both based in Amsterdam); the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra; the Luxembourg Philharmonic; the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra; the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra; Tokyo Sinfonietta; and Vox humana. In 2003, he released the portrait CD "Canticum Tremulum" (fontec/FOCD2555). He is an Associate Professor at Aichi University of the Arts.
