Takashi Yoshimatsu is a composer liberated from the "incomprehensibility" characteristic of contemporary music. In an era where atonality and sparse metrical structures are often considered standard in contemporary music, Yoshimatsu's music is remarkably tonal and develops an extremely rhythmic style employing unique changing meters.
The "Pleiades Dances" collection is also characterized by its sense of tonality and the mystical, transparent sonorities derived from church modes. Each piece, brimming with lyricism and dynamism, is enjoyable whether performed or listened to. However, these works do not merely pander to "accessibility." The meter changes bar by bar, and the irregular melodic lines are meticulously crafted, requiring sophisticated technique and sensibility for a highly polished performance that is pleasing to the ear.
This collection consists of seven short pieces per volume. Volume 1, Op. 27, is predominantly in the D-centered Dorian mode and is composed of gentle, melancholic melodies throughout:
- 1. Floral Dance
- 2. Almost Two-Part Invention
- 3. Apple Seed Dance
- 4. Interlude to Water
- 5. Leaflet Dance
- 6. Almost Three-Part Invention
- 7. Platanus Dance
