This work was begun in 1897 in Paris, where Scriabin was on his second concert tour. This was around the time he became engaged to Vera, a pianist who graduated from the Moscow Conservatory. However, this marriage was opposed by his family and patrons, and it is said that Scriabin's despair is reflected in the work.
It is a four-movement work in a slow, fast, slow, fast tempo scheme. The tense theme of the first movement reappears in the intense concluding section of the fourth movement. Furthermore, the third movement features a beautiful melody, which was also described as the stars singing.
