The piece is in D major and is a single-part form.
A[a(measures 1-4) + b(measures 5-8)]
As the title suggests, the work primarily features ascending and descending scales. The first four measures descend, forming a half cadence, while the latter four measures, conversely, ascend to form a perfect authentic cadence, thereby creating a contrast throughout the entire piece. The harmonic movement is difficult to discern in measures 1and 5 due to the single notes, but both are dominant. Because it is a monophonic melody, one should avoid treating each note in isolation and instead strive for an interpretation that is conscious of the underlying harmonic progression.
