This prelude is written exclusively in whole notes and half notes, entirely composed of chords. With arpeggio markings, performers are encouraged to freely and improvisationally arpeggiate the chords.
However, the harmonic progressions contain rather forceful sections and dissonant chords. Ingenuity is required to make these unnatural progressions flow as naturally as possible.
The piece consists of 33 measures. Therefore, it is recommended to create several "branching points," as dividing the piece into sections enhances listenability. There is a condition, however: chords suitable for stopping at a branching point must be free of non-harmonic tones. While root position chords would ideally be preferred for points of repose, this prelude contains very few chords written in root position.
Performers should identify such branching point chords and allow the music to settle there. Since ascending and descending arpeggios tend to propel the music forward, for chords serving as branching points, consider either not arpeggiating them or, if arpeggiating, limiting it to ascending forms, among other creative approaches.
