No. 4 "Solitary Flower" - Very slowly, simply and delicately expressed - F-sharp minor
Schumann's Waldszenen (Forest Scenes), Schumann's "Lonely Flowers" is plural, whereas Heller's is singular. Indeed, while Schumann writes the opening melody in two voices with accompaniment, Heller's "Solitary Flower" is written as a single line for the first 18 measures. In this respect, unlike the amiable flowers evoked by Schumann, Heller's flower embodies a sense of desolation.
No. 6 "The Chased Squirrel" - Very rapidly - B major
The squirrel pursued by the hunter here is not the chipmunk familiar to Japanese people, but rather a species of red squirrel widely inhabiting the West. It has been a target for hunting since ancient times due to its use for fur and other purposes. The squirrel in the title is singular.
The rapidly descending arpeggios at the beginning, played with crossed hands, and the ascending and descending arpeggios in the middle section vividly depict the movements of the fleeing squirrel. The final three measures, imitating a horn, perhaps represent the hunter's joy at successfully capturing the prey.
