Composed in 1948. The standard performance time is approximately 4 minutes. In E-flat major. It is dedicated to Mompou's friend, the pianist Gonzalo Soriano.
Song
The "Song" is in 2/4 time, marked Cantabile espressivo. It employs a Catalan folk song titled "El rossinyol" (The Nightingale). The piece depicts a daughter who has married into a mountain village, longing for her hometown. A melancholic melody is gently sung. The melody is sung alternately by soprano and tenor voices, and the accompaniment is also polyphonic, making it challenging to create a three-dimensional sound.
Dance
The "Dance" is in 3/4 time, Allegro. It possesses a vitality and crispness absent in the "Song" section. Conversely, carefully playing the intervening sections connected by slurs will further enhance the piece's interest.
