Included in the first volume of "Les Contemporaines" (Contemporary Composers / 4 volumes in total), a collection of pieces for elementary to intermediate learners, supervised by Lucette Descaves. Descaves was a pianist particularly adept at contemporary music, but she was also highly regarded as an educator, and her piano class at the Paris Conservatoire is known for producing many talented individuals. It can be said that such an ambitious publishing project was realized thanks to Descaves' extensive network and exceptional teaching ability. While collections of this type from France, such as Lemoine's "Jardin d’Enfants" and "Cahier de Lemoine," are popular in Japan, we should re-emphasize the educational practicality and high artistic value of this collection, which gathers high-quality works by over 60 leading contemporary composers across its four volumes.
Damas's work was specially composed for this collection, bearing the dedication "To Lucette Descaves and her students." It is a two-page miniature in Allegro moderato, 6/8 time, C major, and free form. Daniel-Lesur, in the preface to the collection, introduces this work by stating, "Damas, one of the youngest composers, proves in this pastorale that he can add delicate dissonances to the elegance of melodic lines." Indeed, chords with major/minor 2nd or major/minor 7th intervals are frequently used, yet they harmonize naturally with the distinctive melody, creating a beautiful sound. Furthermore, it is interesting to note a subtle playfulness, often unnoticed by listeners, in that the piece is played entirely on white keys, without any black keys or accidentals. This reflects the refined touch characteristic of an emerging composer returning from Rome. It goes without saying that it is useful as teaching material for elementary to intermediate levels.
