A solo piano arrangement of a concerto, published prior to the solo arrangements of Mozart's concertos published in 1861 (see relevant entry). Alkan attempted to reproduce the piano and orchestral parts as faithfully as possible, employing every technical means at his disposal. Such a realization is based on his unique conviction to respect the texture of the original work. Alkan sought to manifest the image of classical music as an inviolable ideal on the piano through unparalleled virtuosity.
On the other hand, the style of the cadenza is far from classical; it is extremely "modern." Several sections developed using various motives from the theme are juxtaposed, and in the middle, the concerto's theme transforms into the theme of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony's finale. His transcription most prominently displays the characteristic juxtaposition of "classical" and "modern" found in Alkan's works.
