Composed in 1838, this is a lively short piece written in E-flat major, and one of the most complete among the many gallops. Literally, it is composed of ascending chromatic melodies, characterized by persistent augmented triads. The dynamic range spans from pianissimo to fortissimo, and the performance indications are rapidly changing. In the middle section, rapid leaps in the right hand are required.
In terms of performance history, György Cziffra's influence is very strong, and it is widely known as a virtuoso piece. Franz Liszt himself frequently performed it as an encore piece.
A simplified version in E major exists, and in the trio section, “Galop de Bal, S220” is incorporated. Here, the double notes of the theme are removed, effectively reducing the performance difficulty.
