This is a lively and cheerful Concerto in B-flat major. When performing this first movement, Allegro, first and foremost, to ensure that technically difficult sections do not sound labored, please choose a tempo that allows the rapid chord repetitions in the right hand from measure 16 onwards to flow smoothly.
It is no exaggeration to say that this piece is almost entirely constructed from sequences; it is truly replete with them. Therefore, the most crucial aspect to avoid is a flat dynamic range, making it essential to "introduce variation into the sequences."
This does not merely involve varying the volume. Nor is pitch the sole factor for variation; one must also capture every nuance of change, such as the nature, expression, and mood of each chord.
For example, in the ascending sequences in two-measure units starting from measure 27:
- Measures 27-28: Play normally at p.
- Measures 29-30: As B changes to H (B-natural), the tension slightly increases, foreshadowing the dominant of C minor; play eerily at mp.
- Measures 31-32: Modulating to C minor, the tension further increases; play at mf.
- Measures 33-34: A diminished triad appears, further heightening the tension; play at f.
