“Sorrowfully,” in D minor, 2/2 time. The composer does not specify “Ciro,” stating, “Is Ciro the name of your beloved puppy? Or...” Funeral pieces exist by various composers, not limited to piano works. Although vastly different in scale, when one thinks of a funeral piece,Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, “Funeral March,” 3rd movement, often comes to mind first. Among smaller pieces, there is Tchaikovsky’s “The Doll’s Funeral” (C minor) from Album for the Young. “Ciro’s Funeral” is similarly in duple meter, a sorrowful funeral march. From measure 11, play the right-hand melody beautifully and expressively, as if recalling memories with Ciro. At the mf in measure 16, a strong desire for Ciro to return is imbued in each tenuto-staccato chord. However, the descending melodic figure repeats in the following two measures, seemingly expressing a feeling of profound grief over an unfulfilled wish. From measure 19, the opening theme reappears, but the left hand now drops an octave, adopting a marching rhythm of four quarter notes. Play with even greater darkness and a sense of despondency, conveying empathy for the character.
