This work is inspired by Robert Schumann's Album for the Young, No. 16, "First Loss." The opening motif is directly imitated from the original piece. While the original is in E minor, 2/4 time, with a tempo marking of Nicht schnell (not fast), this piece is in D major, 2/2 time, with a tempo of "flowing," half note = 69-76. Although the tempo might feel slightly more relaxed than when playing the original, it is important to prioritize the imagery of the agitation present in the original's performance disappearing, and realistic sadness and tears emerging as different emotions within the unreality of a dream world, rather than focusing solely on the speed. It should be played naturally with soft sounds. The piece is in A-B-A' three-part form. The B section is Poco più mosso (a little faster than before), with the melody in the left hand. From bar 5 of the B section, there is a poco accel., increasing the tempo and moving rapidly towards f. There, the opening motif is played by the left hand, starting on the note G, just as in the original. It is as if one is pulled back to reality. Subsequently, a two-note descending motif, like falling tears, is played four times by the right hand, leading to A'. In bar 7 of A', the motif starting on G (as in the original) appears in augmentation (with double note values) in a dreamlike manner. The piece does not conclude with a single chord resolution at the end; it remains unresolved. The music seems to dissolve into an illusion, without drawing a clear boundary between dream and reality.
