Under the title, “Croisement de la main gauche” (Crossing of the Left Hand) is stated as the central challenge of this piece. The notes played by the crossing left hand represent the call of a cuckoo. Care should be taken to prevent subsequent notes from lingering too long, ensuring a clear and resonant sound.
Furthermore, beyond the crossing of the left hand, the dialogue between the left and right hands constitutes a highly significant challenge in this composition. In the opening section, the melody commencing in the left hand establishes a somber atmosphere, primarily characterized by movements of minor seconds and minor thirds. From the third measure, the responding melody in the right hand also begins with a dissonant diminished fourth interval, and the subsequent melodic progression appears to wander erratically, as if lost in a forest. When performing, one should focus on the intervals and movements of each hand's melody to discern their respective characteristics. The interplay between the hands conveys an anxious narrative, seemingly far from a carefree one. Independent of this, the cuckoo's calls resonate from various points throughout the forest.
