Composed in May 1917. Dedicated to Etsuko Terasaki. The program notes for "Mr. Kosaku Yamada's Second Works Presentation [sic]" (held in July of the same year on the upper floor of the Marunouchi Insurance Association building) introduced the following tanka: "Yoshisaraba iku e no yama mo ware yukamu / Kokoro hitotsu ni shirube seyo kimi." According to Yamada's own explanation, this tanka was the source of his musical inspiration.
Furthermore, two tanka, including one distinct from the aforementioned, are recorded in the autograph manuscript, both of which are presumed to be by Etsuko Terasaki.
It is said that during this period, Yamada's affection for his piano student, Etsuko Terasaki, deepened. Could these tanka serve as evidence of their burgeoning intimacy?

Abandonnez-vous à la fortune was composed in May 1917 and dedicated to Etsuko Terasaki. In the program notes for the recital of his works in July 1917, a type of Japanese short poem called a tanka was cited. Yamada explained in the program notes that this tanka was the source of inspiration for this piece.
However, not only the tanka from the program notes, but one more tanka as well can be found on the original manuscript, which is assumed to be written by Etsuko Terasaki.
It has been speculated that Yamada’s affection towards Etsuko as a person might have deepen during the period of the composition of this piece. With this in mind, these tankas and this piece can be seen as a means to witness the growing intimacy between Yamada and Etsuko.
