The original work is an ensemble for five instruments: 1st violin, 2nd violin, viola, cello, and double bass. Performers of this fantasy are strongly encouraged to refer to the ensemble score, as it will prove beneficial.
Measures 1-12 are repeated once more at the end and should be considered as a tutti section.
Furthermore, sections that appear with a changed key (e.g., m. 31) should be regarded as a ritornello.
The true theme (subject) appears in measure 13 in the tenor voice, as H E DC D ED. The theme then emerges successively in measure 15 (bass), measure 18 (tenor), and measure 48 (soprano).
Attention should also be paid to fragments of the theme, and these fragments should be brought out. For instance, H E in the soprano at measure 16, and E A in the alto at measure 20.
Moreover, when following the individual voices, parts that are neither the theme nor its fragments, but are perceived as such by the ear, also emerge. For example, in measure 42, the whole note H sustains for four beats within that measure, but with the alto's E entering on the third beat, it is perceived as H-E. Although the voices differ, be mindful of this effect.
This theme, ascending by a fourth, is remarkably impressive and should therefore be treated with care.
