Dedicated to Johann Peter Pixis. This is a potpourri-style work written by the 18-year-old Chopin, incorporating themes from Polish folk songs and dances, which was well-received in Poland at the time of its publication.
It consists of an introduction and three parts, unified in A major. The introduction, in Largo non troppo and 4/4 time, begins with the orchestra and is then taken over by the piano, marked cantabile. Thus, it can be said that the form is similar to that of a piano concerto, where the orchestra begins and the piano then takes over. In the first part, a theme in 6/8 time, based on the Polish folk song "Już miesiąc zaszedł" (The Moon Has Already Set), is freely treated. In the second part, it modulates to F-sharp minor, the relative key of the tonic, and a theme by Karol Kurpiński in 2/4 time is varied. (Kurpiński was a musician who conducted works such as Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 at the concert where Chopin made his debut in Warsaw on March 17, 1830.) This is followed by an interlude marked Molto più mosso, leading to the third part. The third part freely treats a theme based on Kujawiak, a type of Polish national dance (Mazurka). It begins with a unison passage in both hands. The piece concludes with a brillante section that also serves as a coda.
