This is a fugue filled with sorrow and despair. Chromatic progressions are frequently observed, and dramatic chords, such as the Neapolitan sixth, are often employed. The opening presents an extremely rare theme: descending a seventh, ascending an octave, then descending a diminished seventh, followed by a minor second, a perfect fourth, and finally descending chromatically.
These themes appear as what is known as a "tonal answer," where the intervals are adjusted to fit the key. Stretto (where one theme overlaps with another before the first has concluded) is also observed.
As an interpretive idea, rather than imagining a harpsichord performance, it is helpful to envision an organ performance, creating a profound and solemn musical texture with the imagery of thick and thin pipes. First, articulate the theme clearly, while minimizing the presence of other voices at that time. Even by simply making the theme clearly audible, it becomes a sufficiently moving fugue. Thereafter, create dynamic flow according to the situation, taking care to prevent the overall performance from becoming monotonous.
