This piece was composed in 1970, the year after he received the 18th Otaka Prize for his Symphonic Variations in 1969 (Showa 44). Although a piano solo work, it frequently exhibits a compositional style reminiscent of orchestral pieces, characterized by the complex interweaving of sounds achieved through the extensive use of counterpoint and thick chords. This work powerfully reflects the experimental elements and passion of the young Hirayoshi, demonstrating a strong commitment to the “placement” of melodies and chords rather than prioritizing clarity or sweetness. In this piece, each musical idea, motive, and even individual note develops with an organic interconnectedness, forming a drama that prompts the performer to imagine various emotions and scenes. As mentioned, the melodies presented are not straightforward, yet it is certain that the unique “song” (or lyrical quality) characteristic of Hirayoshi’s works is skillfully interspersed throughout. The performer must constantly consider how to make these elements resonate and how the melodies relate to each other as they unfold.
