It is believed to have been the first concerto undertaken around 1787. However, it was revised many times thereafter, but it seems it was still not a satisfactory work, as he wrote a letter upon its publication stating, "It is not among my best." This might be because he felt it was Rococo and conventional.
First Movement: Allegro con brio, B-flat major, 4/4 time
The main theme consists of an alternation between tonic and dominant chords, and is largely Mozartian. In the coda, the tension builds by layering previous motifs, but after the cadenza, it is the only one of the five piano concertos to quietly conclude with the second theme.
Second Movement: Adagio, E-flat major, 3/4 time
The "sigh" motif is a significant element throughout. The piano's ornamental and beautiful melody is captivating.
Third Movement: Rondo, Allegro molto, B-flat major, 6/8 time
Originally, the Rondo, WoO. 6, was used, but it was changed to this movement in 1795. It is characterized by a rhythmic theme with a sf (sforzando) marking on the second note. The entire movement rushes forward with lively rhythms.
