Composed in Barcelona between 1911 and 1914, Impressions Intimes is one of Mompou's representative early works and also his first published composition. It is a collection comprising a total of nine pieces:
- No. 1 'Planys' (a series of movements from No. 1 to No. 4)
- No. 2 'Pájaro triste'
- No. 3 'La barca'
- No. 4 'Cuna'
- No. 5 'Secreto'
- No. 6 'Gitano'
As Mompou himself stated, each piece expresses inner impressions using a simple style. Despite their simplicity, they possess an innocent delicacy and a private, beautiful sound world. It is a highly captivating collection. The standard performance time for the entire collection is approximately 19 minutes.
No. 1 Planys I-IV (Laments I-IV)
Composed in 1911.
No. 1: Planys I
A minor. No time signature or bar lines are indicated. Lento cantabile espressivo. A sorrowful melody is sung over the treading pace of half notes. The melody is mostly written in quarter notes; while simple in appearance, it conceals profound depths.
No. 2: Planys II
Aeolian mode, 3/4 time, Larghetto. It is constructed with the same rhythmic motif, with five measures forming a single unit. The bass notes struck on the weak beats resonate like ripples spreading after being dropped into a bottomless, vast swamp.
No. 3: Planys III
Aeolian mode starting on B-flat, 6/8 time, Grazioso. This piece possesses a lightness contrasting with No. 2, even amidst its sorrow. It has a fleeting beauty, like a girl dancing with her skirt swirling.
No. 4: Planys IV
Aeolian mode starting on C-sharp, 4/4 time, Agitato. Crescendo-diminuendo like rapidly surging and receding waves, chromatic melodic movement, and syncopation are effectively employed. It is a piece with an intensity that stirs anxiety.
No. 2 Pájaro triste (Sad Bird)
Composed in 1914. Aeolian mode starting on C-sharp, 3/4 time, Largo. The song of a common linnet, a bird kept by Mompou's father, is expressed as a motif. The piece is to be played very quietly and delicately, generally from p to pp. Care should be taken to prevent chords from sounding heavy.
No. 3 La barca (The Boat)
A-flat major, 3/4 time, Largo. A piece with a very quiet and introspective sound. The harmonic movement, shifting between dissonance and consonance, resonates softly like receding and returning waves. It would be advisable to aim for an expression that effectively utilizes crescendo-diminuendo effects, like a small boat swaying amidst these waves.
No. 4 Cuna (Cradle/Lullaby)
Composed in 1914. A major, 12/8 time. The repeated bass notes on the same pitch are played with a warm timbre, conveying the affection of a mother putting her child to sleep. It would be beneficial to vary the swaying speed in accordance with the melodic development.
No. 5 Secreto (Secret)
Composed in 1912. C-sharp major (or Aeolian mode), 2/4 time, Lento. A highly introspective piece, full of Mompou's characteristic delicacy. A melancholic melody is quietly sung over an accompaniment of endlessly repeated dotted rhythms. Since the same melody is repeated three times, it is advisable to introduce variations in expression for each rendition. One is seized by a feeling akin to vaguely watching a silent black-and-white film.
No. 6 Gitano (Gypsy)
No key signature, 3/4 time, Andante. Dedicated to Mompou's mentor, Pedro Serra. Composed in 1914. Mompou composed this piece as a remembrance of the kindness shown by a Gypsy after he had an accidental encounter with them in his car. The melody is full of tenderness and sings like a pleasant breeze. By perceiving each measure as a single large beat, the piece gains momentum. It is a captivating piece.
