There are two points of caution regarding this Gigue. One is a piece of advice, which may involve some subjectivity, and concerns how to play the trills in measures 7, 9, and 11. Many pianists perform these trills differently. They are mainly divided into three patterns:
- The pattern playing only two notes, A-G.
- The pattern playing three notes, G-A-G.
- The pattern playing four notes, A-G-A-G.
Personally, I do not prefer consecutive identical notes, so I would choose either the first or third pattern. However, the first pattern invariably sounds too rushed, thus the third pattern, A-G-A-G, feels most appropriate to the author.
The other point of caution is that this Gigue is difficult to perceive the beat (both when playing and listening). Especially as the performance becomes more uncontrolled, the beat becomes harder to discern, leading to a loss of composure. While sections with dotted quarter notes in the left hand are fine, when eighth notes are continuous in both hands, the beat can be lost, making it sound uncontrolled. Always perceive the beat (at least the first beat) when performing. Furthermore, if the tempo is too fast, it may become impossible to execute the trills or perceive the beat. It is recommended to set a moderately calm tempo that allows for clear beat perception and seamless trill execution.
