Andante, D minor, 3/4 time
The origin of this concerto being called “Egyptian” lies in this movement.
At the beginning, a syncopated rhythm is introduced by the strings. Over this, the piano plays an Egyptian-style figuration. Following this, a rhapsodic melody sung by the piano serves as the first theme of this piece, evoking the alluring charm of a troubled night. The middle section is Allegretto tranquillo quasi andantino, in G major. A melody evoking a sense of peace is beautifully played. These gradually develop, and within this development, the unique combinations of sounds and rhythms, aiming for an exotic effect, are captivating. After the opening rhythmic motif is reintroduced, the movement quietly concludes with a whispering ascending piano figuration.
