It consists of five "formants" (things in the process of formation): Antiphonie, Trope, Constellation, Strophe, and Séquence. The performance order of these five formants is left to the performer, but it is not entirely chaotic. Constellation must always be at the center, thus allowing for 8 possible combinations. Boulez himself stated, "The center of interest is not to compare two faces of a single work, but precisely to know that the work will never have one definitively fixed face." However, so far only Trope and Constellation have been published.
Trope
It employs the form of "trope," which involves inserting new lyrics and ornamental melodies into Gregorian chant. It consists of four sections: Texte, Parenthèse, Glose, and Commentaire, and one may begin from any point. Texte and Glose have a determined structure, while Parenthèse and Commentaire have an indeterminate structure incorporating "controlled chance."
Constellation
It consists of Point 1, Point 2, Point 3, Bloc 1, and Bloc 2. The score is printed in two colors, with Points indicated in green and Blocs in red.
