C major, 4/4 time. It serves as a scherzo movement.
It has a structure based on ternary form. The first theme of the main section is march-like. To a rhythm marked by wind instruments and drums, maintaining a steady pace, the piano repeatedly plays ascending figures consisting of glissandos and arpeggios. In the second theme, the time signature changes to a skipping 12/8. The combination of short and long note values creates a lightness different from the opening section. The middle section features bold leaps in register and an alternation between 4/4 and 12/8 time signatures. The recapitulation of the themes is boldly shortened, with the two themes progressing in unison, and the movement quickly concludes.
