The first movement allows for two broadly distinct interpretations. The outcome varies significantly depending on the chosen performance approach and conception. One approach is to consistently maintain an elegant playing style throughout. This involves keeping forte passages not excessively loud, emphasizing beautiful tone quality, and striving for an exceedingly delicate performance, as if handling something fragile. Such an interpretation allows the E-major work to be presented as a unique, delicate, and introspective piece by Haydn. The other approach is to keenly grasp Haydn's distinctive sense of humor and perform with vivacity and joy. This method expresses surprise and delight by clearly articulating forte passages as forte, and distinctly rendering Haydn-esque subito F and subito p. Both approaches are entirely plausible, and ultimately, the decision rests with the performer. However, regardless of the chosen approach, the sense of direction—that the music is progressing towards a specific point—is crucial and should always be considered.

The first movement, in E major, is a Moderato in 4/4 time. The opening four measures are written polyphonically. In the development section (from m. 25), the first theme is treated initially. In the recapitulation (from m. 42), it differs from the exposition by shifting the register within a single passage.
