This two-voice Allegro features the left hand mostly playing a role similar to a walking bass. Therefore, the right hand should primarily bring out the theme. Many pedal points (or organ points) are used in this Allegro. A pedal point is a compositional technique where a note is sustained while the music progresses independently; for example, observe the right hand in measures 13-19.
You will notice that the sustained note B is continuously sounding without interruption. For instance, extracting the main notes from this section:
- 13: 3rd beat G
- 14: 1st beat F, 3rd beat G
- 15: 1st beat F, 3rd beat E-flat
- 16: 1st beat D, 3rd beat F
- 17: 1st beat G, 3rd beat A
- 18: 1st beat B, 2nd beat A, 3rd beat G
- 19: 1st beat F, 2nd beat E-flat
Performers should consciously listen for these important notes, and conversely, play the pedal point B as softly as possible (p) to achieve a clean and cohesive sound.
