First, playing this piece slowly completely alters its mood. Considering the presence of four-bar sequences and the overall flow of the piece, it is recommended to choose a relatively fast tempo. In the first half, the highest note, B, appears in measures 10 and 16. However, the B in measure 10 is merely the theme from measures 1-2 transposed up an octave, so its tension is not particularly high. Conversely, the B in measure 16 is a B that modulates to D minor, so it is acceptable to perceive this B as having higher tension.
The second half begins with ascending sequences in four-bar units. In the second sequence, from measures 27-30, the music reaches its peak at A-flat in measure 29 and then gradually descends, progressing chromatically and modulating to C minor. This is very winding and can be considered an expression of a certain kind of sadness.
The peak point in the second half is the highest note, D, in measure 39, which has quite high tension. From there, it gradually descends, ending on G, 12 degrees lower.
Since this Courante has very clear peak points, handling the dynamics with crescendos for ascending sequences and diminuendos for descending sequences will ensure a smooth flow.
