Performance Notes
This prelude features continuous 32nd-note scales from measure 37 in the latter half, making it technically demanding. Furthermore, the 2/2 time signature, in the context of that era, implies a considerably fast tempo. If one attempts to play from the beginning at a fast tempo, feeling the two beats of 2/2, a difficult situation will arise by measure 37. Therefore, select a tempo that allows for comfortable execution of measure 37, and commence the piece accordingly.
Consequently, this prelude possesses toccata-like elements, thus a performance style that showcases the performer's virtuosity is appropriate.
The challenge lies in dynamics. As no dynamic markings are indicated in this prelude, their interpretation is left to the performer. However, rather than examining the score in minute detail, survey it broadly to identify peak points, whether the musical line is currently ascending or descending, and where the turning points of the piece are located. This prelude tends to have flat dynamics, which is the most crucial aspect to be mindful of. Nevertheless, instead of rapid dynamic changes in small sections, determine the dynamics by observing the piece broadly, as mentioned, allowing for gradual changes.
