For Granados, who had a Cuban father, Cuban music would have been deeply familiar. It is divided into two parts, I and II, but is usually played continuously. The approximate performance time is about 5 minutes.
I.
E-flat major, 2/4 time, Allegretto. Triplets and duplets are played alternately, creating a unique sense of swing. While allowing this swing ample freedom, the aim is to express a relaxed and free atmosphere characteristic of Cuba.
II.
C minor, 2/4 time, Un poco vivo. There seems to be an influence from the Danzas collection by the Cuban composer, Ignacio Cervantes. It is composed in the style of the Cuban dance "Danzón." The sixteenth notes in the left hand serve a syncopated role. Therefore, it is good to shift the accent to the off-beats when playing. The melancholic yet alluring melody is impressive. In the coda, the theme from I reappears, leading to a calmer mood. However, the piece concludes grandly.
