"La Vega" is a work by Albéniz, completed in Paris when he was 37 years old (1897).
This piece, which showcases a transitional style from his middle to late period, is not as frequently performed as "Iberia", but it is often regarded as a masterpiece no less significant than "Iberia".
Originally composed as the first movement of the "Alhambra Suite", subsequent movements were never written, and it eventually became an independent work. Nevertheless, with a performance time of just under 15 minutes, it offers a thoroughly rewarding listening experience.
The title, meaning "the fertile plain," refers to the plain located in Granada, an ancient city in Andalusia.
The score includes a poem by F. Money-Coutts, an English man of letters and Albéniz's patron, the content of which praises Granada.
The piece consists of an A theme (Allegro dolce) with a vibrant dance rhythm and a B theme (Tranquilo e dolce) of a melancholic copla (song), taking the form of A–B–A’–B’–A”–A–Coda.
It was dedicated to the Portuguese pianist, J. Viana da Motta.
