Composed around 1888-89, this is a work from Albéniz's middle period.
It consists of 12 pieces, but apart from the 12th piece, "Torre Bermeja," they are not widely known. Many of the pieces are pan-European salon-style miniatures, and the collection as a whole cannot be said to be particularly outstanding. Many of the pieces are dedicated to the children of Albéniz's students, and their performance difficulty is not high. The premiere was given by Albéniz himself in 1889.
- 1. Gavota
- 2. Menuetto a Silvia
- 3. Barcarola (Ciel sans nuages)
- 4. Plegaria
- 5. Conchita (Polka)
- 6. Pilar (Waltz)
- 7. Zambra
- 8. Pavana
- 9. Poloneza
- 10. Mazurka
- 11. Staccato (Capricho)
- 12. Torre Bermeja (Serenata)
This is the most beloved of the 12 pieces, and its guitar arrangement is also well-known. It is imbued with a sense of nostalgia for Granada in Southern Spain, showcasing Albéniz's true genius and rich Spanish character. The title refers to the vermilion-colored tower in the Alhambra Palace.
It is in E major, shifting to E minor, in 3/8 time, and in ternary form. Over a guitar accompaniment, the soprano sings richly and expansively. One should savor the piece's atmosphere while effectively employing rubato.
