Composed in April 1776 in Salzburg. This concerto is believed to have been composed for Countess Antonia Lützow, a pupil of Mozart's father Leopold, and is thus known as the "Lützow" Concerto. It is a bright and light work, designed to be well-received in social circles. Since the Countess was said to be a skilled pianist, the composition was likely not constrained by the performer's abilities.
Mozart took this concerto, along with the previously composed Nos. 5 and 6, on his journey to Mannheim and Paris, and seems to have performed it in various places when opportunities arose. Indeed, it is known to have been performed during this journey. The existence of various cadenzas for the first and second movements can be seen as evidence of its frequent performance.
First Movement:
Allegro aperto, C major, 4/4 time. Concerto-sonata form. The opening, where the C major tonic chord is played forte, is powerful, yet its high, bright sound also conveys a feminine gentleness.
Second Movement:
Andante, F major, 2/4 time. Small-scale concerto-sonata form. The piano primarily plays the theme, but the orchestra consistently supports the background, making it a colorful slow movement.
Third Movement:
Rondo. Tempo di Menuetto, C major, 3/4 time. Rondo form. The rondo theme is distinctive, featuring a rest on the second beat at a minuet tempo. Furthermore, the A minor episode offers a glimpse of the intensity reminiscent of Mozart's later minor-key works.
